Internal Tides and Baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea. Part I: Model Description and Comparison of Model Results to Observations
نویسنده
چکیده
In the southern Weddell Sea, several water masses with the capability to form Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) meet near the continental shelf break. The internal tidal field over the continental shelf break here is of interest due to its potential to mix these waters and form AABW. A modified version of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) was utilized to investigate the internal tidal fields generated by the interaction of the M2 barotropic tide with topography for transects across the continental shelf and slope in the southern Weddell Sea. Internal tides were generated over the upper continental slope as predicted by linear internal wave theory. The model elevation and cross-slope velocities agreed well with existing observations for the region.

Internal tides and baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea 2. Effects of the critical latitude and stratification
Tidal dynamics affect Antarctic Bottom Water and Ice Shelf Water production in the southern Weddell Sea and the general circulation and mixing. In this region, tidal dynamics were found to be extremely sensitive both to the proximity of the continental shelf-slope break to the critical latitude ? crit and to the existence of a shelf break front. If the continental slope was not in the vicinity ...

A significant fraction of the total oceanic kinetic energy in the southern and western Weddell Sea is supplied by tidal currents [Robertson et al., 1998: denoted “RPE-98”]. The region of strong tides includes the ocean cavity under the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelves (FRIS), and the adjacent broad southern continental shelf and upper slope. The spatial distribution of tidal energy was estimated usin...

The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...
